Solid state batteries are in development and they could bring with them major changes. The best one being a longer lasting battery.
Currently, most gadgets in the market use liquid state batttery packs. The most common type is the lithium ion battery which has been in use for a very long time. Liquid state batteries utilise an anode and a cathode placed some distance apart .An electrolyte moves ions from the anode to the cathode to produce current.
The lithium – ion battery uses lithium ions. However, this battery has many downsides. One of them is the fact that the electrolyte is flammable. Dendrites also form on the electrolyte so there is no clear flow of current. This makes the battery’s lifespan to 2-3 years.
Solid state battery
This type utilises a solid electrolyte. This means that dendrites do not form hence the battery can last longer, up to 10 years. The solid state battery also retains charge for a longer time. This is due to the fact that there are no dendrites to hinder ion flow. Basically, a phone having this battery could last 8 – 10 days after a full charge. How amazing is that.
In addition to that, these batteries are non – flammable. They can also work in high temperatures and you won’t have any overheating issues . This means that the space available for cooling system in gadgets could be utilised for other needs, say expanding the battery.
Samsung engineers already designed a model to solve the dendrite problem. They used Silver – Carbon at the anode producing a battery that was only 5 micrometers thick. Its energy density was however surprisingly high at 900 Wh/l. The best lithium – ion battery only had density of 700Wh/L . The SSB could also withstand more than 1000 charges.
